Job Description:

Incumbent in this class is a sworn officer responsible for providing law enforcement services within Fulton County to prevent crimes, preserve the peace, and make arrests.

Responsibilities include:

  • enforcing the orders, writs, and precepts of the courts
  • providing security to County buildings and other public areas, including courtrooms and detention areas
  • processing and securing inmates at the Fulton County Jail
  • transporting prisoners
  • serving warrants as assigned

Incumbent is authorized to use deadly force when necessary.

This is the first level within a ten-level sheriff classification series. Sheriff, Deputy is distinguished from Sheriff, Deputy III in that the former provides safety and security to County facilities, courtrooms, and detention areas and primarily works at the jail supervising inmates; whereas the latter provides lead direction and one-on-one training to junior officers and possesses advanced knowledge of departmental practices, procedures, and certifications.

Incumbent in this class works night and weekend shifts as required and works toward certification as a Peace Officer in accordance with Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) mandates. This classification series is distinguished from other public safety job classes by its responsibility for court-related services, such as serving warrants, securing inmates at the jail, and providing security for the courts as assigned.

  • Secures entrances to County governmental buildings and maintains order in detention areas or the courtroom.
  • Provides bailiff assistance and inspects courtrooms for the Fulton County Judicial Complex.
  • Secures the Fulton County Jail, including conducting inspections of jail cells, monitoring jail corridors, serving watch duty, and inventorying inmates’ belongings.
  • Processes, secures, interviews, searches, releases, and identifies inmates or other persons in the Sheriff’s custody and prepares prison records.
  • Conducts investigations and collects evidence as required.
  • Processes inmates’ paperwork, booking, classification, and bonding.
  • Serves civil and criminal warrants and makes arrests.
  • Transports and secures inmates to and from County courts and state and medical facilities using patrol vehicle.
  • Enforces traffic laws and issues citations and warnings.
  • Testifies at criminal and personnel hearings or other legal proceedings. Responds to emergency situations and other miscellaneous calls for service.
  • Performs specialized duties as assigned by the Sheriff.

  • Operating office equipment, including a telephone, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
  • Providing effective customer service.
  • Preparing and presenting oral and written communications/reports.
  • Resolving problems and making decisions.
  • Reading maps and symbols.
  • Operating a motor vehicle.
  • Operating personal computers, including spreadsheet, database, word processing, presentation, and other related software.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other County personnel, officials, other law enforcement agencies, and the general public.
  • Communication and interpersonal techniques as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc., sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

EXAMINATION:

The examination will consist of a review of education and experience, accomplished by analysis of the application. Application must document that the applicant possesses the minimum knowledge, skills, education and experience as listed to be rated as eligible. If selected, an official, accredited college transcript is required, at time of employment, for all degrees/course work used to qualify for this position.

Job Requirements:

  • Age : Minimum is twenty (20) years old
  • Education : ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE
  • Experience : TWO (2) YEARS OF WORK EXPERIENCE AS A LAW ENFORCEMENT OR CERTIFIED PEACE OFFICER WITH FULL ARREST POWERS

 

Additional Requirement:

  • Must successfully pass the minimum Physical Fitness/Agility standards and testing for running, sit-ups, and push-ups administered by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. If requested, must submit to a psychological profile test.
  • Must possess a valid Georgia Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
  • Must be at least twenty (20) years of age.
  • Must conform to the following qualifications as required by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Act
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent (G.E.D.)
  • Not have been convicted by any state or the federal government of any crime, the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in a federal or state prison or institution, nor have been convicted of sufficient misdemeanors to establish a pattern of disregard for the law, provided that, for the purposes of this paragraph, violations of traffic laws and other offenses involving the operation of a motor vehicle when the applicant has received a pardon shall not be considered.
  • Be fingerprinted and a search made of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.
  • Be of good moral character as determined by established standards and procedures; Have an oral interview with the hiring authority or designated representative(s) to determine applicant’s appearance, background, and ability to communicate.
  • Be found, after examination by a licensed physician of the Fulton County Health and Wellness Department, to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental conditions which might adversely affect exercising the powers or duties of a peace officer.
  • Successfully complete a job related academy entrance examination provided for and administered by the council in conformity with state and federal law.
  • Such examination shall be administered prior to entrance to the basic course provided for in Code Sections §35-8-9 and §35-8-11. The council may change or modify such examination and shall establish the criteria for determining satisfactory performance on such examination. Peace officers who do not perform satisfactorily on the examination shall be ineligible to retake such examination for a period of six (6) months after an unsuccessful attempt. The provisions of this paragraph establish only the minimum requirements of academy entrance examinations for peace officer candidates in this state; each law enforcement unit is encouraged to provide such additional requirements and any pre-employment examination as it deems necessary and appropriate.
