Description:

Job Description:

The nationally recognized and accredited City of Lakewood Police Department is now accepting LATERAL applications for the expected January 2016 Academy and July 2017 Academy. We are an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourage ethnic minorities and women to apply. The City of Lakewood offers excellent benefits.

To qualify as a Police Lateral candidate, you must be 21 years of age and have a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a nationally accredited university by December 18, 2015. Candidates must have an active Colorado Post Certification and at least three (3) years of previous related experience in good standing as a full-time police officer in a policing environment similar to that found in most urban or suburban settings.

Laterals will go through a reduced or full academy based on experience and qualifications. Laterals receive a rate of pay starting at $30.78 an hour. Lateral hire consideration will be given on a case by case basis.

Other State requirements for Police Officers in Colorado, including Lakewood Police Lateral Agents include:

No felony convictions.

No convictions of misdemeanor crimes that would affect your ability to certify with the Colorado Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board. Visit the POST website at www.ago.state.co.us/post/misdemeanors.pdf for a list of misdemeanors that will preclude police officer certification. Generally, traffic violations do not fall under these restrictions; however, you must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license by the date of hire.

Please note: this application will require you to answer a considerable number of questions and attach two different files; one file containing your most recent unofficial college transcript and the other file containing front & back photos of current driver’s license, copy of high school diploma/GED, copy of DD-214 if you are a veteran, and additional explanation of any of the application questions if necessary. Instructions regarding the attachments are also given in the last question on the application. The application will take one to two hours to complete, possibly more.

Please select the “Supplemental Questions” tab just above these paragraphs to preview the questions and prepare the necessary information to answer the questions before you decide to apply. You may also print the supplemental questions if you find that helpful. They will take up several pages though.

If you are not prepared or qualified for this process, but will be in the future, we encourage you to submit a “job interest alert” on the Job Opportunities page of www.lakewood.org.
