Incumbent in this class performs duties related to monitoring inmates, screening inmate visitation, and securing detention facilities. Responsibilities include supervising inmate work details, generating reports, maintaining records, and assisting Sheriff, Deputies in transporting inmates to various facilities.

This is the first level within a four-level detention officer classification series. Detention Officer is distinguished from Detention Sergeant in that the former performs duties related to monitoring detained inmates and securing assigned areas, whereas the latter supervises and provides on-the-job training to assigned staff in multiple detention pods. Detention Officers are not sworn law enforcement officers and therefore do not have arrest powers.

  • Secures and monitors inmates and screens visitors during visitation.
  • Collects and stores inmates’ property.
  • Monitors judges’ entrance to and exit from the Justice Center Tower and directs public traffic around its vicinity.
  • Conducts security checks within the detention center at the Justice Center Tower.
  • Performs housekeeping duties at the County jail.
  • Controls inmate population in the housing areas of the jail.
  • Assists with the feeding, recreation, laundry, supplies, and general support activities of inmates in the Sheriff’s custody.
  • Serves on tower watches in electronic control stations and prevents inmate escapes by ensuring gates/cells are secure.
  • Reports evidence of delinquency to the appropriate authorities. Generates reports, maintains records, and completes paperwork related to the Court Services and other divisions within the County jail.
  • Assists Sheriff, Deputies in securing buses and transporting inmates to various facilities.
  • Responds to emergency fire alarms and citizens’ requests related to inmates held in custody.

The examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience accomplished by analysis of the application. Application must document that the applicant possesses the minimum knowledge, skills, education and experience as listed to be qualified. If selected, an official, accredited college transcript is required, at time of employment, for all degrees/course work used to qualify for this position.

Job Requirements:

  • Age : Minimum is twenty (20) years old
  • Education : HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR G.E.D. EQUIVALENT
  • Experience : ONE (1) YEAR OF EXPERIENCE PERFORMING PUBLIC SAFETY, SECURITY, CORRECTIONS, OR CUSTOMER SERVICE DUTIES

 

Additional Requirement:

  • Must successfully complete the Fulton County Jail Officer Certification Training Course as required by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department.
  • Must submit to a drug test as a part of the employment process.
  • Must successfully pass the minimum Physical Fitness/Agility standards and testing for running, sit-ups, and push-ups administered by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.
  • If requested, must submit to a psychological profile test.
  • Must possess a valid Georgia Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
  • Must be at least twenty (20) years of age.
  • Must conform to the following qualifications as required by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Act.
    • Be a citizen of the United States.
    • Have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent (G.E.D.).
    • Not have been convicted by any state or the federal government of any crime, the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in a federal or state prison or institution.
    • Not have been convicted of sufficient misdemeanors to establish a pattern of disregard for the law, provided that, for the purposes of this paragraph, violations of traffic laws and other offenses involving the operation of a motor vehicle when the applicant has received a pardon shall not be considered.
  • Be fingerprinted and a search made of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.
  • Be of good moral character as determined by established standards and procedures.
  • Have an oral interview with the hiring authority or designated representative(s) to determine applicant’s appearance, background, and ability to communicate.
  • Be found, after examination by a licensed physician of the Fulton County Health and Wellness Department, to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental conditions which might adversely affect exercising the duties of a Detention Officer.
